Economics plays a very important role in understanding and guiding the reform and development of China's economy. Furthermore, economics assists people in making rational decisions in their daily work and life. As a discipline with a strong scientific foundation among the social sciences, economics plays a vital part in promoting the development of other social science disciplines, especially in management, law, and political science. The research and application of economics has broad prospects. Finance is one of its most widely and deeply applied fields. In 2007, the School of Economics and Management integrated and built upon its original two majors in Economics and Finance to establish its new Economics and Finance major. After four years of undergraduate studies, students will have a solid foundation for various career choices.
Learning Objectives
The aim of the major is to cultivate high-quality and interdisciplinary economics and finance graduates with a mastery of systematic economics and finance theories and analytical methods. Additionally, students will have the skills to solve practical problems in modern economics, especially in finance, and an international perspective while an understanding of China’s domestic condition.
Teaching Plan
This major not only emphasizes providing students with a solid foundation, but also focuses on allowing students to choose their major-focused courses and courses in other disciplines according to their own interests and career trajectory. The basic curriculum includes economics, finance, accounting and management theory, mathematics, and statistics, as well as language, writing and communications, information and network technology, and other technical courses. In addition to the basic curriculum, the major offers various elective courses in economics and finance (including insurance) for students. The major also encourages students to take courses from other departments to broaden their horizons.
Features
The major features a combination of theory and application, and of international and domestic perspectives. It facilitates a combination of a solid theoretical foundation and strong applied abilities, and of a high degree of internationalization and in-depth localization.
Instruction is provided by professors with a history of practical experience and overseas experiences in research and teaching. Some have been long time participants of China's economic and financial practices, and others hold doctoral degrees from esteemed universities such as Harvard University and Stanford University and have many years of teaching and research experiences in overseas universities. Many distinguished professors from overseas research universities also participate in the instruction of Economic and Finance undergraduate courses.
Career Prospects
The career paths for graduates of this major are to continue their studies at domestic and foreign universities (including graduate programs other than economics), enter the public sector for economic management, or serve in financial institutions such as securities companies, investment banks, commercial banks, insurance companies, various investment funds, as well as finding employment in places such as consulting firms and large corporations.
